Rocket Day

Rocket Day is a Cub Scout event that gives new Cub Scouts an introduction to Scouting and potential Cub Scouts an opportunity to join. Boys who join Cub Scouts will receive a rocket patch for joining, and if they join before September 31st, they will also receive a rocket that they can design, build, and launch at Rocket Day. All new Cub Scouts in the district, along with their families are invited to Rocket Day to launch rockets given to them for joining. Packs are encouraged to make the event a pack event by inviting all Cub Scouts and their families to watch the rocket launches, see demonstrations by district Boy Scout troops, have a picnic lunch and even opt to see the Museum of the American GI. Dr. Joe Kerwin, NASA astronaut and CAPCOM for Apollo13 will be onsite to be our honorary launch director.

Arrowmoon District Roundtable

Stay Informed, Attend Roundtable graphicRoundtable is a district monthly meeting typically held the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2815 Welsh Ave, College Station, Texas 77845) to help unit leaders plan and carry out their own program. Roundtable is a form of supplemental training for volunteers. The objective of Roundtable is to give leaders program ideas; information on policy, events, and training opportunities; and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, informed, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts.


Recharter Training Workshop

October 13 and November 10, 2016

Every unit should send at least one representative to Recharter Training. The training is being held during November roundtable at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2815 Welsh Ave, College Station, Texas 77845).

Every December, all units are required to renew their affiliation with Scouting. Units are to complete the internet recharter and submit the signed paperwork by December roundtable. Some important things to remember:

  • Plan ahead to get recharter done early, as this time of the year is typically very busy. It takes time to gather information and collect fees and signatures
  • Ensure all registered leaders have taken Youth Protection Training (YPT) 
  • Ensure the top unit leader (i.e., Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Venturing Advisor, Varsity Coach) has completed BSA training for his or her position
  • Submit internet advancements and service hours by December 31st
  • Read the important information at www.shac.org/recharter

Popcorn Sales

Hundreds of thousands of dollars go back to the Scouting program in the Sam Houston Area Council as a result of the annual popcorn sale. 70% of all dollars collected during the sale support local Scouting. The popcorn sale is a way for a Scout to support his or her way through the various activities during the year. There are three options to sell popcorn: traditional take order sales, sell online to friends and family out of town and show-n-sell. For more information, contact the district popcorn kernel, Teresa Perkins. The council is using a new vendor for popcorn the year, Camp masters.

Fall Recruiting

The fall membership campaign focuses on recruiting new families to the fun and adventures of Cub Scouting. Begin your planning by attending fall recruiting training. Involve all your pack leaders in recruiting by inviting everyone to the training! The council provides a variety of support materials for your pack. We are excited to announce that the fall recruiting campaign will be Rocket Into Scouting. Boys who join Cub Scouts will receive a rocket patch for joining. Scouts who join in September will also receive a rocket that they will be able to design, build, and launch at a fall district event. . April 7-9 and April 28-30, 2017

Powder Horn is an action-packed, hands-on, six-day course which helps Scouts and Scouters learn how to implement high adventure activities into their troop, crew or ship. Powder Horn is designed to introduce and expose Venturing, Sea Scout and Boy Scout adult and youth leaders to the activities, training and resources necessary to manage a successful outdoor or high adventure unit-level program. It is intended to help leaders get out of the box in finding and using resources, and in the way they lead their unit-level outdoor and high adventure programs. The course spans two, three-day weekends. The first weekend will be held at Tellepsen Scout Ranch and the second weekend will be held in Galveston.

October 14-16, 2016

Fun with Son is an overnight campout for newly registered Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Scouts and their adult partner and families at Bovay Scout Ranch (3450 County Rd 317, Navasota, TX 77868). Scouts can participate in BB guns, archery, sling shots, crafts, rockets, sports, campfire and more. Registration includes an event patch, activity supplies, snacks and two meals. Register early as sessions fill up quickly.

The Leave No Trace Trainer Course is a 16-hour, overnight course to train participants, ages 14 and up, to serve as Leave No Trace trainers. Trainers are the backbone of Scouting’s outdoor ethics program, providing instruction to individuals and units wishing to adopt cutting edge outdoor ethics into their unit programs.

Leave No Trace Master Educator Course 

October 28-30 and November 10-13, 2016

The Leave No Trace Master Educator Course is a 5-day course conducted over two weekends. Prior completion of a Leave No Trace Trainer course is recommended. Graduated LNT Master Educators will be able to organize and teach the 16-hour Leave No Trace Trainers Course, the BSA Leave No Trace 101, and Outdoor Ethics Orientation, LNT awareness workshops and facilitate all of the BSA Outdoor Ethics Awards for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow is a one-day training with new ideas and resources for Cub Scout leaders and parents. Over 50 classes are offered on topics such as awards, crafts, games, songs, skits, outdoor cooking, derbies, den meeting ideas, field trips, pack committee resources, pack meeting ideas and more. Leaders and parents can increase their knowledge, improve their skills, and gain enthusiastic attitudes about Cub Scouting. Participants choose from a wide variety of activity and learning sessions and walk away with useful resources and tons of ideas! The training is being held at MacArthur Senior High School (4400 Aldine Mail Route Houston, TX 77039).

July 19-28, 2017 

Scouting’s flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It’s a gathering of approximately 40,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree. The jamboree will be held July 19-28, 2017. ToolBank logoThe Houston Community ToolBank is a nonprofit tool lending program serving other nonprofits by putting high-quality tools in the hands of the volunteers. For three pennies on the dollar, the Houston Community ToolBank provides fast and easy access to tools (e.g., loppers, drills, ladders, wheelbarrows, shovels, hammers, rakes, safety cones, water coolers, cordless drills, safety gears, painting equipment) for Eagle Scout projects and community service projects to increase the impact and community revitalization efforts.

A gift to endowment ensures that the council can continue to offer the outstanding programs we now have and also grow to meet the needs of our youth and community for the next 100 years. The Cockrell Foundation is providing dollar for dollar match of all individual gifts of $500 up to a lifetime cumulative maximum of $25,000 to the endowment.  The council’s permanent endowment ensures that we can offer the outstanding programs and meet the future needs of our youth. The James E. West Fellowship Award is a recognition authorized by the National Council, B.S.A. and presented by the Sam Houston Area Council for individuals who contribute $500 or more in cash (the Cockrell Foundation will match an additional $500) or securities to the Sam Houston Area Council Endowment. This contribution is in addition to, and should not diminish or replace, the donor's annual gift to the Friends of Scouting Campaign.
